Among these, the most prominent is the variety spoken in Turin. This regional <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">koine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, commonly referred to as \u201cPiedmontese\u201d, has spread not only to major centres (such as Ivrea, Lanzo Torinese, Susa, Pinerolo, Dronero, and Cuneo), but also to the communities of <a href=\"https:\/\/alpilink.it\/en\/occitano\/\">Occitan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alpilink.it\/en\/francoprovenzale\/\">Francoproven\u00e7al<\/a> speakers. In contrast, its role in the northeast (<a href=\"https:\/\/alpilink.it\/en\/lombardo\/\">Lombard<\/a>) and southeast (Ligurian) is more limited. Other significant varieties include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alto Piemontese<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Monferrino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alessandrino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Langarolo<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Monregalese<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Canavese<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Biellese<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vercellese<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Valsesiano<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is estimated that there are about 700,000 Piedmontese speakers, mostly in rural areas, small towns, and villages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Piedmontese has a long literary history dating back to the 1500s with the works of Giovan Giorgio Alione in the dialect of Asti.
