Outside of Lombardy, they are also spoken in Switzerland in Canton Ticino and in the Italian-speaking parts of the Canton of Graub\u00fcnden, in the Piedmontese province of Novara between the Sesia and Ticino rivers, and in the western part of Trentino. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main groups in which the Lombard dialects can be split are those of Western Lombard (spoken in the provinces of Milan, Novara, Varese, Como, Sondrio and Canton Ticino), Eastern Lombard (spoken in the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia), the peripheral areas (in the provinces of Pavia, Cremona, and Mantua), and Alpine Lombard (in Valtellina). <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p align=\"justify\"><!-- \/wp:post-content --><\/p>\n<p><!-- wp:gallery {\"linkTo\":\"none\",\"align\":\"wide\"} --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery alignwide has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped\"><!-- wp:image {\"id\":56,\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><\/figure>\n<p><!-- \/wp:image --><br \/><!-- wp:image {\"sizeSlug\":\"large\",\"linkDestination\":\"none\"} --><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_auto\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_1 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_4fb9e5a3\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the main shared features are: the vowel <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00fc<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the outcome of the long Latin <em>u<\/em> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l\u00fcna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8216;moon&#8217;); the dropping of final vowels other than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8216;voice&#8217;); the weakening of intervocalic voiceless consonants (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &lt; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rota<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8216;wheel&#8217;, cf. Italian <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ruota<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; nu\u00e1 &lt; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*notare<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cf. Italian <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nuotare<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">); the dropping of the final nasal and the nasalization of the vowel preceding it (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">p\u00e3 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;bread&#8217;); the loss of geminated consonants (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stupa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018tow\u2019, cf. In some places, the word is a variation on the word <em>bambino<\/em>, for example in the places marked with <mark class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"background-color: #a8e471;\">B<\/mark>\/<mark class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"background-color: #33afd6;\">C<\/mark> (e.g., <em>bamb\u00ec<\/em> in Clusone and Alzano Lombardo).<\/p>\n<p>In the places marked with <mark class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"background-color: #fd6262;\">A<\/mark>\/<mark class=\"has-inline-color has-contrast-color\" style=\"background-color: #ffbc56;\">G<\/mark>, it is a variation on <em>ch\u00e9tif<\/em> derived from the Latin word <em>captivus<\/em> &#8216;captive&#8217;, for example <em>s-c\u00e8t<\/em> (Clusone), <em>scet\u00ec<\/em> (Vertova, Palazzago), <em>s-cet\u00ed<\/em> (Alzano Lombardo), <em>sc\u00e8cc <\/em>(Ponteranica), <em>s&#8217;cet\u00ec<\/em> (Cenate Sopra), or <em>\u0283t\u0283&#8217;\u025bt<\/em> (Monasterolo Del Castello). Other forms include <em>bocia<\/em> (Vertova, <mark class=\"has-inline-color has-contrast-color\" style=\"background-color: #f7f245;\">D<\/mark>), <em>t\u00fas<\/em> (Clusone, <mark class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"background-color: #e1e1e1;\">U<\/mark><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-contrast-color\" style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\">)<\/mark>, and <em>fj\u028fl&#8217;\u026a: <\/em>(from <em>fils\/figlio<\/em> &#8216;son&#8217;: Sant&#8217;Omobono Imagna, <mark class=\"has-inline-color\" style=\"background-color: #d3f3e0;\">L<\/mark>).<\/p>\n<p>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verba-alpina.gwi.uni-muenchen.de\/it\/?page_id=27&amp;db=222\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VerbaAlpina<\/a> website to further explore this map as well as many other lexical concepts across the different languages spoken in the Alps.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-separator size_small\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_auto\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_1 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column us_custom_4fb9e5a3\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p>Texts written in Lombard are attested as far back as the 13th century, for example the <i>Sermon Divin<\/i> by Pietro da Barsegap\u00e8. In the following centuries and up to the present, many Lombard writers have used dialect, especially in plays and poetry. Among the best known of these writers are Teofilo Folengo, Carlo Maria Maggi, and Carlo Porta.<\/p>\n<p>In the last decade, the use of dialect in Lombardy has declined sharply: 2015 ISTAT data show that only 5.6 percent of people in households use dialect predominantly, and 26.1 percent use dialect along with Italian.
