According to oral tradition, miners from the Carinthian Gailtal valley and from the Weissensee settled there before the end of the 13th century &#8211; not far from the old Roman road Via Julia Augusta, which led north from Aquileia and connected Carnia and Carinthia. Linguistic considerations and evidence from place name research support this dating. The first written documents containing the toponym for Timau in the German forms <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teschilbang<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teschelwanch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> date back to 1342 and 1375.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the beginning of the 19th century, Timau has belonged to the larger municipality of Paluzza in the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, which is now in the province of Udine, and has just over 400 inhabitants. The historical minority language spoken there, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tischlbongerisch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Timavese, is based on Southern Bavarian in a Carinthian form and, until the 1950, it was the most important means of communication in the community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/section><section class=\"l-section wpb_row height_auto\"><div class=\"l-section-h i-cf\"><div class=\"g-cols vc_row via_grid cols_1 laptops-cols_inherit tablets-cols_inherit mobiles-cols_1 valign_top type_default stacking_default\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, the linguistic repertoire of the speakers has expanded over time to include the languages Italian and Friulian, which, as respectively the state language and the regionally recognized official language, have pushed back the use of the <i>Tischlbongerisch<\/i> language. Today, only the older and adult generations have language skills in all three languages, while the younger generation has little to no proficiency in the local South Bavarian variety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the other German-based language islands in the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, the historical language minority in Timau is also protected by State Law 482 from 1999.For many years, various projects promoting the minority language have worked to preserve the cultural heritage associated with the language, which has also played an important identity-forming role over the centuries. Cultural initiatives (various folklore groups and cultural associations, the &#8220;Teresina Unfer&#8221; choir as well as school projects and publications) are intended to help preserve <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tischlbongerisch<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, possibly as a language of the private sphere (spoken at home, with family), but at the very least as a language of identification and symbolism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Further reading<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Baum, Wilhelm (1983): <em>Deutsche Sprachinseln in Friaul<\/em>.
